Fascinating first person account by a young Cheyenne who tells of his life growing up in the mid-19th century. Very interesting!
A first person account of tribal life on the plains. If you do not get caught up in the story you chose the wrong book to read.
A true story, written in 1850 by a young Indian man. This was a time before the Europeans had come into their communities. A beautiful story of love, community, strength and respect. Anyone interested in this time period would enjoy the book.
Read this book over 30 years ago, it was so memorable that I have been thinking of and looking for it for all these years. So happy to find it and read it again.
Historical books like this are a real joy to read, even if they are very much a product of the time they were written in. I really enjoy reading these books, and getting a glimpse of life as it was.
his first introduction to native Americans living off the reservation; living daily lives with ceremony, dancing and religious practices...etc. He encouraged Curtis to get to know all tribes as a People, learning through them, about them. Immortalizing their Whole lives , not just through photography, but writing about them before many of the tribes and pueblos vanished under our govt policy of extermination.
I read the version. The Table of Contents lists pictures, but I was not able to access those.
The book was published in 1920 and tells the story of the author's (Native American) life from his earliest memories until the point where white's moved West and battles were waged between the two groups, which occurred shortly after he reached adulthood and married. Much is told about everyday life of a young Plains Indian boy/teen/young man and the lessons he was taught by older men. This would be a good book for teen boys today to read if they desire the qualities of a wise man.
